MEET DUJUAN BROADUS JR.

In most respects, DuJuan Broadus Jr. has always been a typical kid. He loves playing video games and hanging out with friends. He’s an excellent student, just never been a big fan of homework. When he suddenly lost interest in baseball, however, his parents knew something wasn’t right.

“At the time I attributed it to him just being nervous,” remembers his dad.

Turns out that wasn’t the case at all.

Speech pathologists determined that DuJuan was suffering from severe hearing loss due to an abnormality in his cochlea. It had gotten so bad, in fact, that traditional hearing aids would be of no use.

Sometimes referred to as the hearing organ, the cochlea is a small snail-like structure within the ear. It has two fluid-filled chambers lined with tiny hairs. Sound vibrates this fluid and those impulses are translated into electrical signals that are interpreted by the brain.

Dr. Nathan Cass, an expert at UK HealthCare’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Clinic, fitted DuJuan with a MED-EL FLEX 34. This first-in-the-country cochlear implant has the longest electrode array currently available on the market, a crucial advancement that provides electrical hearing stimulation across the full length of DuJuan’s inner ear.

Today, DuJuan is able to hear clearly for the first time and fully experience the everyday marvels of typical teenage life.

It may sound ordinary, but ask DuJuan and he'll tell you the extraordinary truth…

“I’ve never smiled this much.”
